Curatorial Research
Independent Curatorial International (ICI), Mississippi River Basin Research Cohort
Backwater Truths—a published book, exhibition, and community-engagement workshop series—focuses on the impacts of the 1927 flood along the Mississippi River. This project highlights the many facets of the river and examines the various forms of citizenship created and sustained along its banks. Across its three iterations, the project aims to include around 15 artists, archives, and commissioned texts to explore the effects of government policies, architectural design, and systemic violence that originated along the Mississippi River and spread throughout the country. At its core, the project emphasizes the contributions of Black and Indigenous communities, who have preserved these stories through their bodies, voices, and art, all while imagining new possibilities for the future.
